The MIC Youth Leadership program provides hands-on training for a cohort of interns (ages 14-21) and fellows (ages 21-25) from around the country. The year-long program runs from July – June and takes place online with opportunities for each cohort member to organize in-person events and programs in their communities. Cohort members develop and lead projects and initiatives connected to the work and mission of Music In Common and have the opportunity to be trained in MIC's unique pedagogy to lead MIC programs. Additionally, the Cohort is involved with, and in many cases oversees, much of the day to day operations of the organization including social media management, website development, donor and alumni outreach, marketing, program facilitation, running the MIC record label, and publicly speaking on behalf of MIC. The Cohort was created in 2020 in response to the challenges of the COVID-19 pandemic to help Music in Common transition from a youth-serving to a youth-powered organization, ensuring a more authentically served mission and long-term sustainability for the organization by leveraging the program’s leadership training to develop future MIC staff members.
The Youth Leadership Cohort is led by a Senior Fellow and Senior Intern, both stipend positions. The Senior Fellow and Senior Intern serve as team leaders of the Cohort and as the primary liaisons between the Cohort and Music In Common staff and Board of Directors.
Applications for the 2022-2023 Cohort will open on April 1, 2022 and will be reviewed on a rolling basis until all available cohort slots are filled. Following receipt of application, a video interview will be scheduled.
